The ‘Mother City”, CAPE TOWN, feeling a bit ‘Under the Weather’. (23/05/2016)

While the weather remained grumpy outside, I was happy to sit beside a warm crackling fire, in the lounge of the Hotel I am staying at, enjoying it’s warmth, while I share with you this Family Favourite Home Remedy.

Of all the home remedies, a good wife is best.

~Kin Hubbard~

Aaaahhh now that quote is like music to any wife’s ears, right.

When Those sniffles/aches/sneezes/cough start to show up, it could mean only one thing… A Nasty Cold/Flu virus has begun to take hold of your immune system.  Personally, I don’t like being too dependant on medication, not that I am promoting that YOU should not treat your Flu/Cold medically, But when my throat and/or a slight cold gets to me, the first thing I do reach for is this Simple Home Remedy that I have grown up with.  I have fond memories of my Dadi (my Paternal Grandma), who insisted this concoction be given to any of our family members when they down with the cold/flu.

Ginger and Turmeric have some amazing benefits, on their own, and once teamed up like in this form, can prove to be a powerhouse of added benefits.  While many of us use Ginger in some of our cooking and baking, Did You Know that Ginger also has a long history of use for relieving digestive problems such as nausea, loss of appetite, motion sickness and pain.  While Turmeric too, found in most pantrys’ at home, has long been used in the Chinese and Indian systems of medicine as an anti-inflammatory agent to treat a wide variety of conditions.

So if today you are reading this post, and if you too are feeling a bit Under The weather,I wish you a speedy recovery, Do try this Delicious ‘Golden Milk’, or for a sore throat do also try this Home Remedy –  Sore Throat Relief

‘Golden Milk’ – Ginger and Turmeric Milk

*NOTES BY FOODEVA MARSAY*

~ This home remedy may be consumed a couple times a day, it works wonders to help you sleep at night as well, when you are restless from the oncoming cold/flu.

~ You can also make this using your microwave, just keep an eye on it, in case the milk boils over.

~ Ginger may be chopped fine or grated.  There are also dried Ginger Granules, or teas that work just as wonderfully.  I have used these in times when I had not stocked on some fresh ginger roots.

~ Turmeric amounts may be upped to 1/2 teaspoon per cup.

~ You could also try this exact method, but with just the Turmeric and Honey.

~ If you are Lactose Intolerant, You could make a concoction of Sliced Ginger, Turmeric and cover with Honey (use same measurements as in recipe), see picture below, allow to steep overnight, this keeps on shelf for 2-3 days, simply add a teaspoon of this to boiling water to make a ‘tea’, OR you could have this ‘syrup’ as is in raw form, to help ease your sore throat/cough. Also try one with a slice of lemon in it.

~ *REMEMBER TO UP YOUR WATER INTAKE, TO KEEP HYDRATED,  AS WELL AS VITAMIN C, FOUND IN CITRUS FRUITS, AND BERRIES.

~ *DO CONSULT YOUR MEDICAL PRACTITIONER IF THE COLD/FLU WORSENS. THIS IS JUST A NATURAL HOME REMEDY, TO HELP EASE SOME OF THE SYMPTOMS OF THE COLD/FLU.

  1. Excellent blog. My suggestion is that the ground black pepper should be “essential” rather than optional. It increases bioavailability of the active ingredients in turmeric by up to 2000% so the body can absorb and utilize it effectively.
