Luna Blu Gourmet Food Co. – Restaurant Review

Luna Blu… NO I’m not referring to an occasional ‘blue moon‘ , but a wonderful, quaint little restaurant located in Windermere, Durban, South Africa. Very aptly named I would say, because exceptional service together with fantastic range of great quality meals, that is totally Halaal as well, are a rare find in South Africa, and I’m so thrilled to review this rare gem of a restaurant.

So on a recent, ‘about time’, meet up with some of my ‘Soul Sisters’, I had one of my sweet sisters, Bibi Ayesha, choose us a restaurant. As I had just got back from Bahrain and lived away from my Hometown in Durban for many years in Johannesburg, the Durban food scene had, since my younger days, changed considerably. With all sorted, we ’40 somethings’ group of 10 amazing women, most of whom have ever only chatted via social media, FINALLY MET. Amidst all the jovial chatter and laughs, I did manage to click a few pics, and have been pleasantly surprised with Luna Blu.

Young and Beautiful, Owner Fathima and her Equally Beautiful and Sweet Manageress,Rose, warmly and personally welcomed our group to their restaurant. Luna BLU is reminiscent of an Italian bistro, with its small cosy interior minimally, yet smartly decorated with just the right amount of class and an entricatley decorated ceiling that draws your attention up as you take in the entire look of the restaurant. On warmer days sitting on the little outdoor patio area is a must , taking in the scene of passing life while enjoying great Durban Hospitality.

While we awaited for each of our soul sisters to arrive, Fathima and Rose had thoughtfully provided those of us already there with a complimentary Garlic Bread and a Greek Salad. The lovely team at Luna Blu had even done a special set up for us, when they enquired if we were celebrating something special. The Garlic Roll was one of the best I’ve enjoyed, slathered in the creamiest sauce, soft and delectable. While the greek salad was equally good with it’s crunchiness and freshest ingredients that makes for a good salad. Also heading up our starter options was Crumbed Mushrooms, these were perfectly crumbed and served with a delectable side sauce.

With all our lovelies finally arriving, we all got down to placing our meal orders, with a great set of waiters who took time to explain what the dish entailed to some of us newbies to Luna Blu. I think we probably ordered almost everything on the menu..?.. but doing so allowed us each to have a taste of each of the different selection. I’ve heard lots of good review, on social media, about the Potato Pizza from Luna Blu, which was OK..but for me, MY HEART was stolen with the 1st bite of the creamy and delicious CHICKEN ALA THAI pizza. It was an explosion of flavours and the pizza base thin and crisp. Their pizza all come in one size, large, and was sliced into squares upon request, so we all could get a taster?. Do give it try next time you at Luna Blu.

As the conversation along our table went on and we awaited for our main meal, I was so impressed to have caught glimpse of both Fathima and Rose, getting their hands into all the meal preps at the back of the kitchen, and later watched as Fathima herself, set-up another table for a birthday celebration for another of her patrons, how commendable is that?. Main meals had left us all hushed, as we savoured each bite. The Fillet La Luna topped a creamy mushroom sauce was perfectly done, soft and succulent. The mixed grill platter, comes with lamb chops, kebab, chicken skewers and steak..portion size on this was not huge so makes for a great option for those that want to taste a little bit of everything. All the meats on the platter were done to perfection and served with a side of chips and salad, it was a Well balanced meal on a platter. Another strongly recommended dish to try was the Gordon Bleu, A Juicy Fillet of Chicken rolled around smoked Deli Meat and Cheese, and finally topped and served with a cheesy sauce.  Luna Blu also has a good range of pasta dishes to choose from, so we opted for the ‘H-Man’ Pastas, a range of creamy penne together with mushrooms and peppers. The Vegetarian and Chicken ‘H -Man’ pasta were throughly enjoyed by the group.

And no meet up should ever end without dessert…and Luna Blu definitely know their dessert. We settled and pre-ordered 2 types of dessert, prior to arriving, For us it was Single portion sized, Creme Brûlée, a perfect crack to the sugar topping led us to dwell in the creamiest custard below. It wasn’t too sweet and wonderfully flavoured. Whilst the portion sized Cheesecakes, smooth and divine, are what dreamy eyed indulgences are made off? .

So from the moment we stepped into Luna Blu to the moment we left, we were, And I can assure you, so will you, bowled over and fell in LOVE with Luna Blu, it’s ambience, food, and the amazing team making each patron feel so at home. I wish them the best for the future, and hope this standard of impeccable, Rare Quality, being offered keeps getting better. Would I return to Luna Blu?…YOU BET..I can’t wait to take along my family next time I’m in DURBAN again.
