Easy Sambal Salad

A Light and Refreshing Tomato Salad, this Sambal is EASY to Prepare and can be ENJOYED as an accompaniment with a variety of international cuisines.

Don’t you LOVE how a dish can be interpreted in different parts of the World.  Take this Easy Sambal Salad, the basic ingredients are exactly the same as one would use for a Mexican Salsa. Growing up in Durban, South Africa, we have watched Grans, mums and aunts whip up this “SALSA“, yet it was referred to as a “SAMBAL”.  Yet Today I also learned, via google, that SAMBALS, is actually a spicy sauce/dip with it’s origins stemming from Asian Cuisine. So whatever you refer to this side dish as, I’m sure it goes done perfectly with any cuisine.

This salad is literally done…CHOP>>>CHOP.  On MY FACEBOOK PAGE, I have an Album in which I share some of my ‘MUST HAVE’ items, ingredients, household gadgets, and this particular gadget is one such in my home.  I remember purchasing this MEZZALUNA, some 15 years ago, when we had purchased our very 1st home after moving to Johannesburg. And I had even tagged it along  when we moved to Bahrain for a while. YEAH I LOVE IT THAT MUCH?, CAN YOU TELL?.  Having this nifty little gadget, makes my life so much easier, and I most especially enjoy it when I have to chop onions.  But the uses of it doesn’t stop just at onions, absolutely anything that needs a chop, works wonderfully with this Mezzaluna.  This is the very same gadget I used today to make my Easy Sambal Salad.

Prepping gets done CHOP…CHOP with my Mezzaluna

DID YOU KNOW???

A MEZZALUNA is a Knife with a single or double curved blade with a handle on either sides of it.  “MEZZALUNA” actually means ‘HALF MOON’ in Italian, a prominent shape these knives take on is ‘curved’ like a half moon.  These gadgets are usually marketed as a ‘HERB CHOPPER’, Mezzalunas are also always sold with a chopping board, that has a slight to shallow indentation in it, which allows for the rocking motion of the knife blades during chopping.

I do hope you give this Sambal Salad a try, and as always, I DO look forward to your feedbacks.

Happy SAMBAL SALAD CHOPPING LOVELIES

Ingredients

4 Large, Firm Tomatoes

2-3 Green Chilles

1 Small Red Onion

1/4 Cup Fresh Coriander Leaves (cilantro)

1/4 teaspoon Sugar

Salt and white Pepper for seasoning

4-5 Tablespoon White Vinegar

Instructions

? Halve the tomatoes, and remove the seeds and pulp.

(I Save the tomato pulp to use in other meals, blended with tomato paste.)

? Chop, separately, the fleshy tomatoes, Onions, Chilles and Coriander.

? Add these chopped vegetables to a Salad Bowl.

? Season with salt and white pepper powder, the sugar and the vinegar.

? Toss lightly, and allow to rest for a while, as the chopped ingredients will macerate with the seasonings, allowing for the flavour to further develop.

? EASY SAMBAL SALAD is ready to be enjoyed with your favourite Rice Dish or why not try it with Tacos, Nachos, Sandwich Wraps, or even in Pita with your favourite protein.

? You can adjust the heat of the salad, by adding less or more chillies as preferred.

Add Chopped Cucumbers for a little bit more of a variation, to this already yummy salad.
