Review of Netflix Reality Series: The Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives
By Foodeva Marsay (@foodeva_marsay)
Likened to be inspired by Keeping up with the Kardashians, and to some extent even having vibes from Hollywood Exes series, as well as Sex in the City, this is one show you MAY just want to skip.
A reality based Netflix original, The Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, is about 4 women that have been friends for about 25 years. Maheep Kapoor, Neelam Khotari, Seema Khan and Bhavana Pandey, are all married to Bollywood actors, Sanjay Kapoor, Sameer Soni, Sohail Khan and Chunky Pandey respectively. Actors that haven’t truly made it to the ‘A class’ list of Bollywood actors, yet it is amazing to see the standard of living these lot can afford.
I’m not sure what’s so ‘FABULOUS’ about this show, or the wives lives, it does all seem a little OVER THE TOP (OTT) and pretentious.
The 1st episode already had the women chatter and banter in loud voices, which almost had me switch off the show. But being a Bollywood fan, I persevered.
Maheep, is the loudest amongst them, with a mouth that needs some cleaning detergent🤪.
Neelam, whom I enjoyed watching as a young actress growing up, seems to have aged rather gracefully. She does have a accent to her English when she speaks, which seems put on. The entire series, there is constant talk of her wanting to do a comeback, onto the Bollywood big screen.
Seema Khan, although married to Sohail Khan, lives a very unconventional married life, and stays in a seperate house from Sohail. She is crazy about Kim Kardashian, and loves messaging her.
Bhavana Pandey, is the calmer of them all, seems rather genuine and more spiritual.
There is nothing ‘Indian’ about this series, from the fashionable outfits these ladies adorn themselves in, their talking in English, The Foods and Drinks they consume, nothing reflects their Indian Culture, which is sad, as they focus on being so westernized.
The Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, was produced by Karan Johar, and is deliberately studded with cameo appearances by big names in the Bollywood industry. An almost ‘Kofee with Karan’ take outside his studio setup. The series also highlights more of these wives businesses, as well as the elder kids that are stepping into the Bollywood scene now. There was mention in one episode about Nepotism, and how their kids work hard. But I feel this show only further highlights the degree of nepotism in Bollywood. Not once is a smaller or upcoming actor been featured as a cameo. It was all about promoting their inner circle, their fashion lines, their jewelery line, hey even the ‘women’s only’ getaway to Doha, is all about promotion. Who believes these wives can truly afford to pay for their getaway to Doha, live in a palatial suite rooms, and be driven around in a Rolls-Royce.
All this climaxes to a major bash at the King Khan, Shar Rukh Khan, House, and The glitzy do is hosted by his wife Gauri Khan.
All in all, It is a cringe-worthy binge watch, and it is a question of whether you too will bear to watch it, because you a Bollywood fan too, or give it a Skip altogether.
