Against The Loveless World, is Another passionate, and Amazing novel by Susan Abulhawa.
This story is based on the main Protagonist, Nahr (meaning River, after the river her mother crossed during fleeing from Palestine), who relates her story whilst imprisoned in an Israeli, state of the art prison, called the Cube.
Susan Abulhawa yet again delivers a brilliant piece of work and this novel is truly unforgettable. The storyline unravels and takes it’s readers through many parts on the middle east. Nahr tells her story, from being born to refugee parents, their life and her childhood in Kuwait. The story winds it’s way as Nahr and her family are yet again refugees when they have to leave Kuwait and head out to Jordan, before finally taking us to Palestine. Susan Abulhawa, expertly merges facts and fiction that bring this story to life. I admire her for the fact that she isn’t afraid to bring to the fore many of the darker and taboo topics, that muslim communities, and other religions, across the World, would rather not talk about. We get to see a little of the dark side of the middle east. Nahr and the other characters in the novel, take us on a Rollercoaster of emotions as we share their struggles and disappointments. But we also get to see their positive hopes, aspirations, their love, joy and family connections.
No spoilers on this one from me, as I would LOVE for you to get yourself a copy and read it too. I loved this read, like I did the other read by Susan Abulhawa.

Here are a couple of my favourite little quotes from “Against The Loveless World “
* “…if we had not loved each other none of us would have survived.” – from writings of James Baldwin
* “…how is it that death can be life’s only assurance and yet also it’s greatest, most devastating surprise.”
* “To survive by loving each other means to love our ancestors too. To know their pain, struggles, joys. It means to love our collective memory, who we are, where we come from…”
