While being away from South Africa, the one thing I missed like many South Africans, you can ask any South African who stay abroad, would be the fine quality of sausages, boerewors and polony options we have in South Africa. What is Boerewors you may ask…
BOEREWORS , The name is derived from the Afrikaans words boer (“farmer”) and wors (“sausage”). Like many other forms of sausage, boerewors contains a high proportion of fat and coarsely ground minced meat, and packed in sausage casings. Traditional boerewors is usually formed into a continuous spiral and is usually braaied. A local variant of the hotdog is the boerewors, or “boerie”, roll which is a piece of boerewors in a hotdog bun, often served with a tomato, chili and onion relish.
Now I do opt for cleaner eating most of the time, but sometimes, the urge to want to indulge on a hotdog or burger, is too large to ignore. That’s exactly what happened yesterday, and it made for our monthly BURGER NIGHT ?
So on a recent trip to our hometown, Durban in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, I was treated to a Burger evening at my brother’s home. I could not get over the delicious tasting burger, lovingly created by my sister-in-law, and I made sure I got us a batch of the ‘BOERIE PATTIE’.
This ‘BOERIE PATTIE”, is a combination of a perfect Boerewors and a regular burger Pattie. A combination that’s made in foodie heaven. Longbury Meat Market, in Unit 8, Longbury Drive,Phoenix, Durban where I purchased these from (Fully Halaal), has definitely mastered this trick of their trade, and has now made this ‘Boerie Pattie’ one of their signature products amongst their “gourmet range”, with raw patties weighing between 130 grams to 180 grams . Perfectly Flavoured and Juicy after preparation, this is one burger pattie that will leave you fully satisfied on your weekend cheat meals. I prepared the patties by grilling, in an oven tray with a drizzle of oil onto each pattie. You could instead add a dab of butter if you prefer. As the wonderful aromas wafted through the house, I quickly got all the other burger ingredients ready. I especially liked how the pattie did not shrink exponentially from it’s raw pressed form and fitted perfectly into my burger buns.
The Delectable Flavours of ‘Boerewors’, with a slight bit of a kick from chillies, we South Africans like a bit of spice you know ;-P, comes through with each ravenous bite. Imagine all this without the chunks of fatty sinew so common in such products. This ‘Boerie Pattie’ from LMM is now my new current favourite. Adding a bit of shredded cheese to the tops of the patties just before removing from the oven, had taken the burgers to a new level of deliciousness. What I also enjoyed is the fact that I didn’t need to over do it with added sauces to enhance the burger flavour, I simply topped with sautéed rings of sliced red onion, a slice or 2 of tomato, Lettuce leaves and just a simple ‘Steers Burger Relish’ . You can use regular Tomato sauce. These Patties can be prepared over hot coals, on a frying pan or griddle pan.
