MY THOUGHTS
Being a HUGE SRK (Shah Rukh Khan) Fan, There was no way I wasn’t going to watch this movie. A lot of people may be put off with the genre of this movie, with it being Action, But I most definitely ENJOYED every moment of it. You are not going to sit through a little over 2 hours, watching a serious crime related movie, but rather a milder tone to it. It is so reminiscent of yesteryear type of films, from the storyline, to the period of focus, the costumes and dialogues. So right at the onset let me warn you.. If you are wanting to watch a scene with the “famous SRK arms thrown wide” moment, this movie has NO SUCH. And I promise you won’t really miss it that much?
Raees (Shah Rukh Khan) is the main character, who is a shrewd and daring businessman. He lives by a motto that he heard his mum once deliver…
“No Business(work) is too Small, and No Faith/Religion is bigger than Business(work).
Shah Rukh Khan, does a brilliant performance, and delivers what you expect from an 70-80’s type of movie, an era of “angry Young Men” and “masala entertainment”. With the Prohibition of alcohol in the state of Gujarat, Raees, sees an opportunity to start earning more money without wanting to be the middleman any longer. With his childhood friend, Sadiq(Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub), they both get into this bootlegging business.
ACP Majmudar(Nawazzuddin Siddiqui) is hell bent on nabbing Raees, and he plays a brilliant performance that is dotted with some witty comic relief moments.
The main female lead, Asiya (Pakistani actress, Mahira Khan), was a rather safe performance by her. For me Personally, I felt there was Nothing in the performance of Asiya that stood out and made her get noticed.
The music score was great, also with a bit of 70-80’s feel, especially with the “Item Number” performed by Sunny Leone, to the re-vamped music rendition of the golden oldie “Laila Main Laila”, with all of the glamour and hip swaying beats, may just leave you wanting to whistle along. AND no Shah Rukh Movie is ever complete, no matter which era it depicts, without a bit of a romantic beat, as well as a soulfully sad song too. For me, my favourite song has to be Zaalima sung by Arijit Singh and Harshdeep Kaur. I have added a video link for you to enjoy at the end??
OVERALL… I loved the performances by both Raees and the Cop, Majmudar, their Thief-Cop interactions keeps you engaged throughout the movie. Cinematography was also a plus in Raees, as it wonderfully captures the character of Raees as the Badshah of that era, and will captivate the audience. The performance by Shahrukh Khan , is going to make you appreciate this actor so much more. The Never before seen Avatar for Shah Rukh Khan as a Beared, Spectacled and Surmah Eyed , is a far reach from the dreamy clean cut, Romantic Khan we LOVE TO WATCH, BUT this get-up simply adds to the stellar performance by the KING HIMSELF.
So, I do hope this review convinces you to head out soon to watch Raees, you will be pleasantly surprised??
