Savoury Rice with Garlic,Onions and Peppers

A Perfect Side Dish that pairs with almost all protein, this Savoury Rice is Simple to whip up and loaded with flavour. 

Rice is a fundamental food in many cultural cuisines around the world, and it is an important cereal crop that is a staple in many homes and feeds more than half of the world’s population. There has been mentions of many benefits of rice, from helping stabilise blood sugar levels to improving bowel movements.  Looking to up your vitamin B1 in your body?, well rice has been known to benefit  this, as well as providing the body with fast and instant energy.

It has been noted in many documents , that a lot of other important medical conditions that may benefit from this cereal grain. There are thousands of varieties of rice grains that can be found the World Over, with different flavours and grain thickness.

Now I have days when I like to ‘Re-Use’ unused food at home, it is what a Lovingly term as my “Want Not-Waste Not” dishes.  This is one such dish, that is if I have any leftover rice that may be sitting in my fridge. If not, Then it simply means I will boil a fresh batch of rice to make the dish. Either way, this Savoury Rice with Garlic, Onions and Peppers is match made in culinary heaven, perfect to pair with your favourite main meal protein.

The idea is rather simple, Boil your rice as per pack instructions, either add Turmeric Powder for colour, as well as Cinnamon Stick and whole Cardamom Pods for flavour… OR just boil without any such add ons. Either way, the end dish is till a winner.

I simply add Garlic, onions and peppers to soften in butter.

Seasoned with these 2 versatile seasoning from the Robertson Spice range (IN SOUTH AFRICA) , and allow them to sauté for a little while, before adding the cooked rice and tossing.

Savoury Rice with Garlic, Onions and Peppers

Ingredients

2 cups Boiled Rice (with turmeric powder, cinnamon stick and Cardamom Pods -*Optional)

1 Small Onion finely chopped

1/2 Cup of Red and Green Peppers chopped

1 teaspoon Chopped Garlic (Or garlic paste)

2 Tablespoon Butter

1 teaspoon Spice for Rice (+ 1/4 teaspoon extra for tossing stage)

1/2 teaspoon Dried Mixed Herbs

1-2 Tablespoon Chopped Fresh Parsley

Instructions

? Add Butter to a large enough pan, and allow to melt

? Now add the Onions, and sauté until soft and translucent.

? Follow by adding the chopped Peppers and the Garlic

? Add in the Spice for Rice and Mixed Herb, and mix well.

? Lower the heat on stove top, and now add in your cooked rice.

? Gently toss through all the ingredients, and add in 1/4 teaspoon more of the Spice for Rice, and a little more of the dried mixed herbs, crushed with fingers-tips before adding.

? Serve the Savoury Rice onto a platter, and add a good sprinkle of Chopped Parsley

? Savoury Rice with Garlic, Onions and Peppers is ready to be ENJOYED, with your favourite Protein.

  • ANY variety of rice may be used.
  • Boil rice as per pack instructions.
  • Use any brands of spicing you have available, but do try to add a spice specific for rice, as this adds loads of flavour.
  • You can opt to use just one colour of pepper, but I love the contrast of the different colours when plating up.
