TRY THIS EASY TO MAKE FLOWER CROWN DIY PROJECT, IF YOU LOOKING TO SPRUCE UP YOUR NEXT ENTERTAINMENT EVENT, AND MAKE THEM WITH YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO ADORN YOURSELVES USING THEM AS ACCESSORIES. A FLOWER CROWN CAN BE MADE WITH ANY TYPES OF FRESH OR DRIED FLOWERS, OR EVEN DIFFERENT TYPES OF FOLIAGE, RIGHT OUT OF YOUR GARDEN.
The 15th of October 2017, had been South Africa’s 1st ever National Garden Day. A day that is now set aside for Inspiring and encouraging us to get out into our gardens, getting our hands ‘dirty’ or simply enjoying the little pleasure of being within the beauty of nature with loved ones.
It was such a pity I couldn’t do much for this years Garden Day, as I had other prior commitments on that particular day, but hey…why only limit our enjoyment in our gardens to one particular day right ? . After watching one of my favourite South African magazine show’s, Top Billing, I was inspired to give this DIY project a go.
These flower crowns have definitly made a come back, I would say, and to the younger generation, NO…it was not 1st seen on Snapchat/Pinterest/Instagram/Facebook story camera filters. This idea for flower crowns/ flower halos, dates back to many centuries, and was a popular accessory throughout the world. I fondly remember how I adored my eldest cousin’s Ferosa’s wedding, sometime back in mid 1980’s, and she had the most gorgeous setup. She, together with all of her bridesmaids, had fresh flower crowns to complete their look. They looked ethereal to say the least?. Today I make my own flower crown, and got to enjoy my garden, while pruning flowers, and then sitting down to some “me time” while enjoying doing this DIY project.
Here take a look at how you too can make this fresh flower crown yourself…
HOW TO MAKE A FLOWER CROWN – DIY

YOU WILL NEED:
> FLORIST WIRE (OR LIKE I HAVE USED, VERY THIN BEADING WIRE)
> FLORIST TAPE
> FOLIAGE/FLOWERS
> A PAIR OF SCISSORS AND A PAIR OF WIRE CUTTERS
For my project, I made use of roses, as I have plenty in my garden right now. I also added in a few other small flowers and leaves to create a complete look. Here I opted to do just a half filled flower crown and focused on just the front of my crown, but you can to a much more fuller one. Remember you could also use faux flowers, or for more of a variety, grab a bunch of fresh flowers from your florist. Do keep fresh flowers in water nearby, to help keep them hydrated as you work.
INSTRUCTIONS
~ MEASURE THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF YOUR HEAD, AND CUT A PIECE OF FLORIST WIRE, USING THE WIRE CUTTER, TO FORM A LOOSE CROWN ON YOU HEAD. CAREFULLY TWIST THE 2 CUT ENDS AND TWIST THE WIRES TO FORM A FULL CIRCLE.
~ STARTING AT THE JOINED BIT OF THE CIRCULAR WIRE, BEGIN WRAPPING THE FLORIST TAPE AROUND THE WIRE, AS SHOWN IN PIC. REPEAT THE WRAPPING AT THIS POINT FOR ABOUT 4 TURNS, TO ENUSRE A STEADIER FINISH. KEEP WRAPPING THE FLORIST TAPE AROUND THE CIRCULAR WIRE, PRESSING FIRMLY AS YOU GO ALONG, UNTIL YOU RETURN BACK TO THE JOINED END.
~ PLAN WHAT FLOWERS AND GREENERY YOU WOULD LIKE PLACED WHERE ON THE WIRE CROWN, AND USING YOU SCISSOR, CUT FLOWER/FOLIAGE AT LEAST 3 INCHES FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE FLOWER.
~ USING THE FLORIST TAPE ONCE AGAIN, START ATTACHING THE FLOWERS AND GREENERY TO THE CIRCULAR WIRE. REMEMBER TO WRAP THE FLORIST TAPE 3-4 TIMES AROUND THE FLOWERS TO HELP THEM STAY IN PLACE.
~ USING THE FLORIST TAPE ONCE AGAIN, START ATTACHING THE FLOWERS AND GREENERY TO THE CIRCULAR WIRE. REMEMBER TO WRAP THE FLORIST TAPE 3-4 TIMES AROUND THE FLOWERS TO HELP THEM STAY IN PLACE.
~ THAT IS IT..ALL WRAPPED AND READY TO BE YOUR NEWEST ACCESSORY FOR AN AFTERNOON IN THE GARDEN. WHO NEEDS THOSE SNAPCHAT/FACEBOOK CAMERA FILTERS, WHEN YOU CAN HAVE THE REAL DEAL ?
~ FOR THOSE THAT DON’T LIKE IT ALL FLOWERY, WHY NOT TRY THIS IDEA OF A CROWN, USING JUST GREENERY, AND TYPES OF VINES THAT CAN EASILY WRAP AROUND TO FORM A CROWN. I HAVE THESE FERNS GROWING IN A CORNER OF MY GARDEN, AND JUST ONE LONG TENDRIL MADE FOR A PERFECT WRAP AROUND CROWN. I SIMPLY CLEARED AWAY A FEW OF THE LEAVES FROM THE TWO ENDS, THEN HELD THE TWO ENDS TOGETHER AND TAPED THEM TOGETHER USING THE FLORIST TAPE. REMEMBER TO REPEAT THE TAPE WRAP AROUNDS A FEW TIMES TO FORM A STEADIER END RESULT.
